4/25/2022 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Wednesday for several votes and to hear testimony
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, April 27 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to vote on several bills and to hear testimony on a variety of legislation.

The committee will be voting on the following bills:
  • 2022-H 6617, sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter), establishes a military family advocacy program to address child abuse and neglect in military families.
  • 2022-H 7310A, sponsored by Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket), allows the Division of Vital Statistics to provide an original birth certificate of an adult adopted person to the adopted person's lineal descendants if the adopted person is deceased.
  • 2022-H 7694, sponsored by Rep. Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown), corrects the erroneous misdemeanor classification of the criminal offense of fraudulent conversion by agent or factor.
  • 2022-H 7714A, sponsored by Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly), creates the crime of stolen valor, for falsely representing himself or herself as a member of the military or armed forces, which is punishable by imprisonment of not more than one year, a fine of $1,000, or both.
  • 2022-H 7935, sponsored by Rep. Deborah A. Fellela (D-Dist. 43, Johnston), provides that any day(s) when the Department of Health is closed be excluded from the maximum number of days within which a hearing must be held by the board when a physician or limited registrant's license is suspended without hearing.
The committee will also hear testimony on the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2022-H 7712, sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls), replaces the terms "mentally retarded" and "retarded" as used in the General Laws with the words "intellectual and/or developmental disability" or "person with an intellectual and/or developmental disability."
  • 2022-H 7892, sponsored by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, Narragansett, South Kingstown), provides for the sealing and unsealing of court files in residential eviction proceedings and provides that any eviction for nonpayment of rent, in which the rent arrearage is paid through a rent relief program, shall remain sealed permanently.
The meeting will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, on i3Broadband on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.  The meeting will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
