3/21/2022 Media Advisory: Prescription, pharmacist bills before Senate Health Committee
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Health and Human Services Committee meets twice this week for hearings on bills concerning prescriptions and pharmacists.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22, the committee is scheduled to meet at the rise of the Senate session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in the Senate lounge on the second floor of the State House for hearings on several bills concerning prescriptions, including:
  • 2022-S 2069 — This bill sponsored by Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence) updates current law on pharmacy benefit managers and prescription drug pricing, including establishing maximum allowable cost limits.
  • 2022-S 2070  This bill sponsored by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Newport, Little Compton, Tiverton) establishes the Wholesale Prescription Drug Importation Program for the importation of wholesale prescription drugs from Canada to provide savings to Rhode Island consumers.
This meeting will be streamed live online by Capitol Television at https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
 
The committee also meets on Thursday, March 24, at the rise of the Senate session in Room 211 on the second floor of the State House, when it will hear several more bills concerning prescriptions and pharmacists, including:
  • 2022-S 2207 — Sponsored by Chairman Miller, this bill authorizes the creation and implementation of a pharmaceutical redistribution program by the Department of Health and the Board of Pharmacy.
  • 2022-S 2329 — Sponsored by Sen. Bridget Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, Narragansett, South Kingstown), this bill authorizes licensed pharmacists who successfully complete a course on tobacco cessation therapy to prescribe tobacco cessation drug products.
  • 2022-S 2330 — Sponsored by Sen. Kendra Anderson (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), this bill authorizes pharmacists to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptives, provided that the pharmacist has completed a training program approved by the Board of Pharmacy.
  • 2022-S 2613 — Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Michael J. McCaffrey (D-Dist. 29, Warwick), this bill limits the accessibility of over-the-counter dietary supplements to prevent the misuse or abuse of such products and provides a conspicuously posted notice about their possible side effects at the purchase counter.
