STATE HOUSE – The 201st anniversary of Greek Independence Day will be celebrated this week on March 22 at the State House.

The recognition of Greece's Independence and the participation of Rhode Island's Greek American communities is held under the sponsorship of Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, East Greenwich, West Greenwich) in cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Churches of Rhode Island.

Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, head of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will be making his first trip to Rhode Island in 30 years to take part in the celebration.

Archbishop Elpidophoros and Stratos Efthymious, the Consul General of Greece in Boston, will be joined by representatives of Rhode Island’s Greek Orthodox churches on their visit to the State House.  Archbishop Elpidophoros will deliver the opening prayer at the beginning of the House session and the celebration will follow at 5 p.m. in the State Room of the State House.

Greek Independence Day is celebrated annually on March 25, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821.
