3/14/2022 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Thursday to hear a variety of legislation
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Thursday, March 17 at the RISE of the House (approximately 4:45 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to hear testimony on a variety of legislation.

Among the bills being heard are the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2022-H 7679, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), spells out the responsibilities of both the landlord and tenant with respect to the inspection and treatment of bed bugs in residential premises.
  • 2022-H 7680, sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls), prohibits a landlord from inquiring about the immigration status of a tenant subject to any federal laws or regulations, but may request financial information or proof of identity.
  • 2022-H 7683, sponsored by Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick), allows a residential tenant, if they wish, to pay their security deposit in 12 equal installment payments at the same time they pay their monthly rent.
  • 2022-H 7685, sponsored by Rep. Anastasia P. Williams (D-Dist. 9, Providence), promotes more diversity in the composition of the Judicial Nominating Commission and would require that each list of qualified judicial candidates it submits to the governor for nomination include two people of color.
  • 2022-H 7701, sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), allows the presiding justice of the Superior Court to designate an associate justice of the Superior Court to accept application for wire taps.
The meeting will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15, and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers, and live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.

Individuals may testify in person before the committee at the State House. Sign-up sheets are available in/outside the hearing room.
