3/7/2022 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Thursday to vote on one bill and hear a variety of legislation
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Thursday, March 10 at the RISE of the House (approximately 4:45 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to vote on one bill and hear testimony on a variety of legislation.

The committee will consider legislation (2022-H 7087) sponsored by Rep. Charlene M. Lima (D-Dist. 14, Cranston, Providence) which creates a custody procedure for pets in divorce and separation proceedings based on the best interests of the animal. The act would not apply to assistance/service animals.

Among the bills being heard are the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2022-H 6663, sponsored by Rep. Brandon Potter (D-Dist. 16, Cranston), prohibits the production, sale, or importation into Rhode Island of any force-fed poultry product or food containing a force-fed poultry product and would impose a civil penalty of $500 for each violation.
  • 2022-H 7361, sponsored by Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence), prohibits the sale, offer of sale, trade or distribution of fur products as defined and would make violations punishable by a civil fine.
  • 2022-H 7505, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), prohibits on-duty/off-duty law enforcement officers from utilizing any robot/police robot dog/UAV, whether armed/unarmed, within the scope of their employment as well as police departments from the purchase/procurement of any robots/UVAs/police robot dogs.
  • 2022-H 7507, sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon, Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), provides for municipal and state police authorities to utilize automated license plate readers. Further, it identifies what data may be collected and defines how the data can be used.
The meeting will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15, and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers, and live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.

Individuals may testify in person before the committee at the State House. Sign-up sheets are available in/outside the hearing room.
