Senate passes resolution condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine
|
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today voted in favor of a resolution sponsored by Sen. Melissa A. Murray and Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The resolution (2022-S 2429) declares that the Senate vehemently opposes the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia and…completely supports the Rhode Island Ukrainian-American community in this time of great crisis.” It details the suffering Russia has wrought upon its smaller western neighbor since Lenin invaded in 1921, including a Stalin-induced famine that killed between 7 and 10 million people between 1932 and 1933 and Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014 as well as its concurrent, continuing efforts to sow violence in the Donbas region, leading up to its unprovoked attack on sovereign Ukraine last week.
“This is a global crisis and we condemn this aggression in the strongest terms possible. The courage of the Ukrainian people has inspired our nation and the entire world. We stand with you and hope for peace. Slava Ukrani,” said Senator Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), who, as a child, lived in the one house that stands between the two Ukrainian churches in Woonsocket, and now represents the neighborhood. “Slava Ukrani” is a Ukrainian national salute that means “glory to Ukraine.”
The flag of Ukraine was hung in the Senate today in solidarity, and the pastors of both of those churches — Father Mykhaylo Dosyak of St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church and Father Boris Kroner of St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church — were welcomed to the Senate to witness the resolution’s passage.
“The invasion by Russia of a peaceful, sovereign nation for no good reason is unprecedented in modern times. This is the most dangerous time in Europe and the world since Sept. 1, 1939. Mr. Putin should end his personal war and leave the Ukrainian people alone,” said Senator Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, East Greenwich, West Greenwich).
