2/15/2022 Rep. Ackerman meets with Youth Advisory Board
STATE HOUSE — Rep. Mia Ackerman (D-Dist. 45, Cumberland, Lincoln) has once again convened her District 45 Youth Advisory Board comprising students from Cumberland and Lincoln. Representative Ackerman created the board to give students the chance to gain knowledge about the inner workings of state government and contribute input on pending legislation.

“The board provides an opportunity for the students to discuss how bills in the General Assembly affect them and impact the lives of their peers,” explained Representative Ackerman. “It’s important to encourage civic engagement among our youth, especially since they are the ones who will have to live with the decisions we make today. It’s also interesting to hear everyone’s point of view on some of the hot issues. It has been very refreshing to have their perspective.”

The members of the youth group are Kyle Smolan, a senior at Mount St. Charles Academy; Seth Brayton, a senior at Cumberland High School; Catherine Galgay, a junior at Cumberland High School; and Alakananda Krishnan, a senior at Lincoln High School. The board meets regularly to give input and their point of view to Representative Ackerman on the issues that are most important to them.

At the end of their term, the four members of the board will be invited to the State House to hear debate on the House floor, as well as meet important stakeholders.

Preparing youth for the business and political world has long been an issue of importance to Representative Ackerman, who served as a mentor to the Cumberland Youth Committee for six years prior to her election to the House of Representatives.
