2/14/2022 Media Advisory: Senate Judiciary Committee to hear elections bills tomorrow

STATE HOUSE – The Senate Judiciary Committee will meet virtually tomorrow for hearings on numerous bills concerning elections.

The meeting is scheduled tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the rise of the Senate session (expected sometime after 5 p.m.) via WebEx.

Among the bills on the calendar are:
  • 2022-S 2007 — Called the Let Rhode Island Vote Act, this bill sponsored by Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown) will allow voting by mail without needing an excuse, improve voter roll cleanup, allow online applications for mail ballots, allow nursing home residents to receive mail ballot applications automatically and codify mail ballot drop box requirements.
  • 2022-S 2216 — Sponsored by Sen. Alana DiMario (D-Dist. 36, North Kingstown, Narragansett), this joint resolution would put a question on the ballot that could allow same-day voter registration.
  • 2022-S 2119 —Sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairwoman Cynthia A. Coyne (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence), this bill allows the Board of Elections to begin the certification of mail ballots 20 days prior to Election Day. It also establishes a new and more comprehensive mail ballot voter signature verification process.
  • 2022-S 2232 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Samuel D. Zurier (D-Dist. 3, Providence) would create a legislative commission to study ranked-choice voting for General Assembly and General Officer primaries.
  • 2022-S 2097 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Tiara Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence) would repeal Rhode Island’s voter identification law.
