10/22/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: Redistricting Commission to meet Monday; new meeting planned on review how inmates are counted
STATE HOUSE — The Special Commission on Reapportionment will meet Monday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Kickemuit Middle School, 525 Child St. in Warren.

Committee chairmen Sen. Stephen R. Archambault (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston) and Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland) have also announced that an additional meeting will be scheduled at the State House to discuss the counting of prison inmates for reapportionment.

“We are going to schedule an additional hearing, which will be held at the State House, within the next two weeks. This will allow for an in-depth discussion with Kim Brace and the public on the topic of where inmates are counted for the purposes of redistricting,” said Senator Archambault.

“We are working to engage the public in an open and transparent way throughout this process,” said Representative Phillips.

Kimball W. Brace is president of Election Data Services, which is providing consulting services for the state during the redistricting process. He is unable to join the Commission Monday due to a medical issue.

Monday’s meeting is the sixth one scheduled at various sites around the state to gain the input of Rhode Islanders on the redistricting process. The state constitution calls for the General Assembly to reapportion its districts as well as the two congressional districts after each 10-year federal census.

In addition to an overview of the redistricting process, statewide census data and legislative seat distribution, the commission is expected to hear an in-depth review of census data for Bristol County. There will also be a demonstration of the riredistricting.org website.

Masks are required inside the middle school.

All meetings will air live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15 and 61, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers. The meetings will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
