10/19/2021 Rep. Williams issues statement on the passing of Colin Powell
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Anastasia P. Williams (D-Dist. 9, Providence) issued the following statement concerning the recent passing of former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell:

“With the passing of Colin Powell, our nation’s first Black Secretary of State, we have lost one of our most impressive, selfless and dedicated Black Americans.  He was a true inspiration to every young Black American child as he demonstrated a path to respect and success that was achievable if one puts in the hard work and sacrifice necessary to succeed.  My favorite moment of his lengthy legacy came in 2008 when he looked deep into his conscience and realized that the best path forward for our nation would come from him breaking party-lines and endorsing our country’s first Black president, Barack Obama.  In his 13 rules for leadership, Colin Powell stated that ‘It can be done.’  He believed, and as do I, that in order to fix the numerous problems in our society, one must first believe that such change is possible and throughout his life, Colin Powell demonstrated that this belief was true.   Our country has sadly lost a great public servant but I have no doubt that his legacy of service and respect will continue on for generations,” said Representative Williams.
