9/8/2021 As 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Sen. Raptakis hopes legislature will approve his bill to commemorate day with moment of silence
STATE HOUSE – When Sen. Lou Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, East Greenwich, West Greenwich) introduced his bill (2021-S 0088) to allow teachers in public schools to hold a brief moment of silence to recognize the anniversary of the tragic attacks of 9/11, he hoped the measure would be in place for the 20th anniversary of the attacks this year. Unfortunately, the legislation did not pass before the end of session, but Senator Raptakis hopes the measure will win passage next year.

The proposal is modeled on a measure enacted in the State of New York to commemorate the attacks on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon.

“With the 20th anniversary of the attacks almost upon us, it’s important to recognize this terrible moment in our history and to memorialize those who lost their lives or loved ones on that day,” said Senator Raptakis. “While I was disappointed the bill did not pass in time to give schools the chance to be a part of the national conversation happening around 9/11 on this anniversary, I hope that the legislature will act early in the session to allow Rhode Island educators to join with their colleagues in New York in having the chance to honor future anniversaries.”

“This is a reminder that after 20 years, terrorism will not go away.  This bill will commemorate the tragic losses of the past while signaling that we must remain vigilant for the future,” concluded Senator Raptakis.
