7/7/2021 General Assembly passes Sen. Lawson and Rep. Henries’ legislation which grants an income tax exemption for artists within the East Providence art district
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly passed legislation (2021-S 0575 / 2021-H 6313) sponsored by Sen. Valarie J. Lawson and Rep. Brianna E. Henries which grants a personal income tax exemption for writers, composers and artists residing within the East Providence art district.

“The arts community in East Providence has been growing steadily for the past several years and their contribution to our community has been a significant aspect of East Providence’s cultural and economic momentum.  This legislation will support our local artists while also bringing in new ones which will benefit all of East Providence,” said Senator Lawson (D-Dist. 14, East Providence).

“East Providence has a thriving arts scene which adds to the city’s already rich community and culture.  We have seen the success that other art districts have had in the state and this bill will bring that same success and culture-building community to East Providence, making East Providence stronger in the process,” said Representative Henries (D-Dist. 64, East Providence).

The East Providence art district is defined as a point of land on the northeast bank of the Seekonk River abutting the Henderson Bridge and proceeding easterly along Wilmarth Avenue to a point at the intersection of North Broadway, then proceeding southerly to South Broadway and continuing to the intersection of Warren Avenue, then proceeding westerly on the southerly side of Warren Avenue to the intersection with Burgess Avenue, then proceeding southerly to the intersection at Veterans Memorial Parkway, then proceeding westerly to the intersection at Waterfront Drive, including the area known as Bold Point Park, then northerly along the southeast bank of the Seekonk River back to the point of the beginning.

The legislation now heads to the governor’s desk for consideration.
