6/28/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Finance meets today to consider several bills; meets on Tuesday to consider and hear other legislation
STATE HOUSE – Today, Monday, June 28 at the 1:30 p.m. in Room 35 of the State House, the House Finance Committee will meet to consider several bills. 

Among the legislation being considered are the following bills:
  • 2021-H 5204, sponsored by Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy (D-Dist. 38, Hopkinton, Westerly), requires every electric distribution company and natural gas distribution company to submit to the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers an emergency response plan for review and approval.
  • 2021-H 5214A, sponsored by Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland), eliminates the $10 fee requirement for the sales tax permit.
  • 2021-H 5806A, sponsored by Rep. Evan P. Shanley (D-Dist. 24, Warwick), reduces the required minimum number of special plates ordered from the DMV to 150 sets upon payment of $3,000 conditionally refundable fee.
  • 2021-H 6357A, sponsored by Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton, Portsmouth), allows any member in active service, regardless of age, to be eligible for an accidental disability retirement allowance.
On Tuesday, June 29 at the RISE of the House (approximately at 5:30 p.m.) in Room 35 of the State House, the committee will consider a bill (2021-H 6423) sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick) which authorizes West Warwick to join the State Employees' Retirement System of Rhode Island.

The committee will also consider legislation (2021-H 6408) sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) which authorizes Central Falls to issue bonds in an amount not to exceed $5,760,000 to finance the construction, renovation, improvement, alteration, repair, furnishing and equipping of schools and school facilities in the city.

The committee will also hear testimony on legislation (2021-H 6370) sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence) which would authorize the director of the Department of Business Regulation to license the cultivation and sale of cannabis.  This is a first hearing only and there is no vote scheduled.

The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
