6/21/2021 Rep. Potter selected for ‘Emerging Legislative Leaders’ program
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Brandon C. Potter has been selected to participate in the national 2021 Emerging Legislative Leaders Program sponsored by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation (SLLF).

The Emerging Legislative Leaders Program is designed to develop the leadership potential of emerging political leaders for the challenges of the 21st century. The program focuses on analyzing and providing feedback on personal leadership style, creating awareness of the importance of values and ethics in governance and public service, gaining perspective on the importance of the role of the state legislature in contemporary American politics, and recognition of the importance of legislators as consensus builders and facilitators of compromise.

Up to 50 state legislators from across the nation take part in the program, which usually takes place at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, but will be held virtually July 14-16 this year. Since 2005, over 500 legislators have participated in the program.

To identify the candidates, SLLF relies on the recommendation of the leadership in each state legislature. Representative Potter (D-Dist. 16, Cranston), who is serving his first term in the House this year, was nominated by House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi, and selected by a committee composed of the SLLF senior staff and Darden faculty. The selection criteria are nonideological and non-partisan.

“I am honored and tremendously excited for this opportunity to grow as a leader and as an advocate for my constituents. I’m looking forward to gaining valuable perspective from other legislators across the political spectrum who have been elected at a time when there’s a great call for transformation in our country. I’ve found that collaboration and finding consensus are critical to crafting legislation and moving it forward, and I’m particularly looking forward to developing those skills with this group of some of the most exciting new state legislators from around the country,” said Representative Potter.
