6/14/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday to consider several bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, June 15 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to consider several bills.

Among the bills being considered are the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2021-H 5084, sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Bristol), allows for the sealing of records pertaining to cases for which a person is acquitted or otherwise exonerated from a charged offense and eliminates the $100 fee for the expungement of a criminal record.
  • 2021-H 5188A, sponsored by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick), would prohibit the sale, offer of sale, trade or distribution of fur products as defined and would make any violation punishable by a civil penalty of up to $500 for the first violation with increased penalties for subsequent violations.
  • 2021-H 6054, sponsored by Representative Knight, makes changes to the motor vehicles laws by repealing the sections that require the filing of security or bond with the DMV following a motor vehicle accident in which the operator of the vehicle does not have insurance.
  • 2021-H 6189A, sponsored by House Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian, would reduce from age 25 to 21 as the age which a person who is adopted in the state of Rhode Island would have unrestricted access to their original birth certificates.
The State House remains closed to the public as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
