6/1/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Wednesday to consider several bills, including solemnization of marriage bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, June 2 at 4 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House to consider several bills.

Legislation (2021-H 5034A) sponsored by House Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence) which allows the governor to designate any person to solemnize a marriage within the state of Rhode Island on a particular day and within a particular city or town will be considered.  Senate Majority Leader Michael J. McCaffrey’s (D-Dist. 29, Warwick) version of the bill (2021-S 0014A) will also be considered at the meeting.

Among the other bills scheduled for a vote, the committee will consider the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2021-H 5139, sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), requires the Department of Children, Youth and Families to report all suspected cases of child sexual abuse to the Children's Advocacy Center.
  • 2021-H 5400, sponsored by Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence), terminates all parental rights of any person convicted of sexual assault which results in the birth of a child from that assault.
  • 2021-H 5733A, sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls), allows jurors to donate their juror fees to the state. Any such donation would be deposited into a restricted receipt account in the general fund and shall be allocated to the Rhode Island Veterans Home Community Living Center.
  • 2021-H 6328, sponsored by Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton, Portsmouth), excludes the possession of buprenorphine from those controlled substances that can result in criminal penalties.
The State House remains closed to the public as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
