Media Advisory: Sponsors to discuss bill to ban high-heat waste burning
|
STATE HOUSE – The sponsors of legislation to protect Rhode Island from new waste-incinerating facilities will hold a State House media event to discuss the need for their bill Thursday ahead of its hearing in the Senate.
The media event is scheduled tomorrow, Thursday, May 6, at 3:15 p.m. on the south steps of the State House (facing Providence Place Mall).
Rep. Justine A. Caldwell and Sen. Bridget G. Valverde have introduced the High-Heat Waste Facility Act of 2021 (2021-H 5923, 2021-S 0527) to prohibit the construction and operation of solid waste incinerators and other high-heat waste processing facilities to protect the health, safety and welfare of Rhode Islanders.
Senator Valverde (D-Dist. 35, East Greenwich, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Narragansett) and Representative Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich) will be joined at the event by Kevin Budris, staff attorney at the Conservation Law Foundation.
MedRecycler-RI Inc. is seeking approval to construct a medical waste treatment plant on the East Greenwich-West Warwick border with plans to accept 70 tons of medical waste daily from across New England and burn it at extreme temperatures through a process called “pyrolysis” that has never before been used for medical waste.
