4/14/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: Sen. Raptakis bill that allows moments of silence for 9/11 remembrance will be heard by Senate Education Committee today
STATE HOUSE – Legislation (2021-S 0088) sponsored by Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, East Greenwich, West Greenwich) which would allow teachers in public schools to allow a brief moment of silence to be observed in memory of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 will be heard by the Senate Education Committee today.

The meeting will be held today, April 14 at 4 p.m. via WebEx.

“After the New York law was brought to my attention, I thought this policy would also be useful in Rhode Island’s classrooms.  September 11th was one of the most seminal events in our country’s history and as each anniversary of the event goes by, it’s important that we impress the significance of the attack on our students to not only memorialize all that were lost and sacrificed during the attacks, but also to help engage in conversations with students about the impact and history of that terrible day,” said Senator Raptakis.

By passing the law during the current legislative session, the law would be in effect for the twentieth anniversary of the attack in 2021.

The meeting will be streamed live online through Capitol Television and can be found here: http://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
