3/22/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: Legislators to participate in Third Annual RI Multilingual Education Advocacy Day tomorrow, March 23
STATE HOUSE – Several legislators will be joining the Coalition for a Multilingual RI tomorrow, Tuesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. for the third annual RI Multilingual Education Advocacy Day.  Due to COVID-19 precautions, this year’s event will be held virtually on Zoom. Those interested in participating can register at bit.ly/multilingualri2021 and the event will be live-streamed on Capitol TV and the Coalition for Multilingual RI Facebook page.

Multilingual Education Advocacy Day will bring legislators, students, parents, educators, community organizations and members of the public together to discuss challenges and advocate for resources to expand multilingual education opportunities to all Rhode Island students.

The Zoom press conference will begin with remarks from Sen. Frank A. Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, North Providence), Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket), Rep. Grace Diaz (D-Dist. 11, Providence), Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), and Sen. Ana Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence).

The event will also feature remarks from Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kelvin Roldán; parents Fernanda and Andrew Poyant; multilingual students and educators; Aline Binyungu, Women's Refugee Care; Jonathan De Jesus and Jaqueline Agustín, Progreso Latino; Sandra Victorino, Care New England; Paige Clausius-Parks, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT; and Dr. Erin L. Papa on behalf of the Coalition for a Multilingual RI; along with closing remarks from Howie Berman, Executive Director of ACTFL.

The Coalition for a Multilingual RI is a coalition of organizations and community members dedicated to creating a culturally sustaining educational environment where all Rhode Island students learn in multiple languages from Pre-K to college.
