The Walmart Foundation presents a grant of $50,000 to develop a Rhode Island African Heritage History Education curriculum for all public schools

 STATE HOUSE – The Walmart Foundation presented a grant of $50,000 to the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society to develop a Rhode Island African Heritage History Education curriculum for all public schools. Accepting the grant at a State House ceremony on March 4, 2021 is Theresa Guzman Stokes of Newport, managing director of the RI Black Heritage Society. From left are House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick), House Finance Committee Chairman Marvin Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown), Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket), chair of the RI Legislative Black & Latino Caucus; Rep. Anastasia Williams (D-Dist. 9, Providence); Stokes; Christopher N. Buchanan, director of public affairs and state and local government relations for Walmart; Sen. Tiara Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence), and Paul DeRoche, Walmart's RI government representative. Rep. Williams and Sen. Mack have introduced legislation (2021-H 5697 / 2021-S 0458) to incorporate African-American history into all the state's public schools.
