2/24/2020 MEDIA ADVISORY: RI Black & Latino Caucus will hold 11th Annual Joint Legislative Black History Month Heritage Celebration, tomorrow, February 25
STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus will hold the 11th Annual Joint Legislative Black History Month Heritage Celebration tomorrow, Tuesday, February 25 at 5 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House.

Rep. Jean Philippe Barros (D-Dist. 59, Pawtucket), Chairman of the RI Black and Latino Caucus, will deliver the opening remarks.  The Reverend Dr. Olivier Bala, Senior Pastor of the Mount Hope Community Baptist Church, will give the invocation and the benediction.

Rep. Marvin L. Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown) will introduce the caucus and House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello (D-Dist. 15, Cranston) and Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea will give brief remarks.

The keynote speakers of the celebration are Anthony Roberson, Ph. D, Sergeant of the Providence Police Department; and Blessed Sheriff, a Medical Student at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School.  Keith W. Stokes, Vice President of the 1696 Heritage Group, will introduce the keynote speakers.

Black History Month is a celebration of African-American people and events, and has been celebrated annually in February in the United States since 1976.

The Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus represents and advocates for the interests of disadvantaged people throughout the State of Rhode Island. It seeks to increase a diverse participation and representation in all levels of government. The ultimate goal is to close (and ultimately, to eliminate) disparities that still exist between white and non-white Americans in every aspect of life.

The event will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channel 15 or in high definition on Channel 1013, and on Channel 34 by Verizon and Full Channel subscribers.  It will also be streamed at www.rilin.state.ri.us/CapTV.
