4/25/2018 Rep. McLaughlin legislation calls for 25% discount for senior citizens on water surcharge
STATE HOUSE — Rep. James N. McLaughlin (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls) has introduced legislation that would ease the financial burden on senior citizens by providing a water surcharge discount.

The legislation (2018-H 7514) would provide that persons age 65 years and over who have a surcharge applied to water supplied to them for personal use and consumption would receive a 25 percent discount on such surcharge.

“Rhode Islanders can lose from a third to a half of their income when they retire,” said Representative McLaughlin. “But they still need to have the necessities of life afforded them. This legislation will protect our aging population by easing the financial burden of one of life’s basic needs: water.”

The legislation, which is cosponsored by Representatives Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly), Raymond H. Johnston Jr. (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston) and Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), has been referred to the House Committee on Finance.
