3/14/2018 Rep. McLaughlin legislation would provide daycare for children of service members on active duty
STATE HOUSE —Rep. James N. McLaughlin (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls) has introduced legislation that would provide daycare for the children of Rhode Islanders who serve in active duty in the armed forces.

“The men and women who serve their country in the armed forces provide a difficult service for all of us at extreme risk; and our debt to them is one that can never be properly paid,” said Representative McLaughlin, who serves on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. “The last thing they should have to worry about is the expense of child care when active duty takes them far from home. It’s only fitting that a grateful state should foot the bill to keep their children provided for in daycare until their return.”

The bill (2018-H 7483) would offer daycare services at state expense for the children of any Rhode Island resident on active military duty for a period of time longer than 30 days.

The legislation, which is cosponsored by Representatives Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly), Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence) and Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston), has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
