Rally Wednesday for ‘Fight for $15’ legislation

STATE HOUSE – There will be a rally Wednesday in support of legislation (2017-S 0510, 2017-H 5595) sponsored by Sen. Jeanine Calkin (D-Dist. 30, Warwick) and Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell (D-Dist. 5, Providence) to gradually raise Rhode Island’s minimum wage to $15 per hour.
The event, being organized by Senator Calkin and Representative Ranglin-Vassell in conjunction with Rhode Island Working Families, Rhode Island SEIU and Rhode Island Jobs With Justice, is scheduled Wednesday, March 22, at 2:30 p.m. at Jerry’s Beauty Salon, 500 Broad St., Providence. The media is welcome.
Workers, including restaurant employees; business owners, and the sponsors are scheduled to shed light on and discuss the adverse effects of low wages on working Rhode Islanders, as well as the opportunities that higher minimum wages would have on quality of life and living conditions in communities across the state.
The act would gradually increase the hourly minimum wage from $9.60 to $15 by 2022, and would also gradually increase the hourly minimum wage for employees receiving gratuities $3.89 to $15 by 2026.
