1/11/2017 Representative Fogarty appointed chairwoman of House Committee on Municipal Government
STATE HOUSE — Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello has appointed Rep. Kathleen A. Fogarty (D-Dist. 35, South Kingstown) to serve as chairwoman of the House Committee on Municipal Government. The committee considers all matters affecting municipal governments and transportation.

Representative Fogarty said “It is an honor to be given this responsibility by the speaker in my second term in the House. I will draw upon my experience in municipal government to help me as we deliberate legislation that affects our cities and towns.”

Prior to her election to the House of Representatives, Representative Fogarty served as a member of the South Kingstown Town Council from 2002 to 2012. She held the position of council president from 2008 to 2010 and vice president from 2004 to 2008.

In addition, Speaker Mattiello appointed Representative Fogarty to the House Committee on Labor, which deliberates legislation relating to workers’ compensation and labor laws.

During her first session, Representative Fogarty introduced legislation that requires elementary schools to have at least 20 minutes of free play recess during the school day. The new law defines free play as being in an unstructured environment supervised by appropriate school personnel.

She also introduced legislation to modernize the state’s E-911 system, requiring updates to allow users to access the system via text, video and other methods.

She also sponsored a law to give the secretary of state the authority to purchase new voting machines. This new law allowed the secretary of state to replace the state’s antiquated equipment with new state-of-the-art technology for 2016 election cycle.
