4/8/2016 Rep. Duffy Messier welcomes students to State House as House observes ‘Ben Mondor Day’
STATE HOUSE — As the Pawtucket Red Sox prepared for its opening day festivities at McCoy Stadium, Rep. Mary Duffy Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket) welcomed music students from St. Teresa Elementary School in Pawtucket to the State House to sing a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

The students, along with Principal Mary Carney, music teacher Janice Berlinsky and the Rev. David Thurber, pastor of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church, were Representative Duffy Messier’s guests in the House chamber, where a resolution was read declaring April 7 “Ben Mondor Day” in Rhode Island. Mondor, who became owner of the team in 1977 and died in 2010, has been credited with turning the struggling minor league franchise into one of the most beloved enterprises in minor league baseball.

“This is a particularly exciting year in light of the ball club’s recommitment to Pawtucket,” said Representative Duffy Messier, whose district includes McCoy Stadium. “With the way winter has been encroaching on spring, we’re all ready for baseball season. And nothing heralds spring in Rhode Island better than PawSox opening day.”
