6/22/2021 Media Advisory: Cannabis legalization, regulation bill up for Senate vote today
 
STATE HOUSE – The Senate will vote today on legislation legalizing, regulating and taxing cannabis, as well as many other measures. The session is scheduled at 4 p.m. at Sapinsley Hall at Rhode Island College in Providence. It will be live streamed by Capitol Television at https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.

Among the bills being voted on are:
  • 2021-S 0568A — Sponsored by Senate Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence) this bill would legalize, regulate and tax adult recreational cannabis use.
  • 2021-S 0672 — This bill sponsored by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairwoman Cynthia A. Coyne (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) would allow compensation for those wrongfully convicted who serve more than a year in prison.
  • 2021-S 872A — This bill sponsored by Sen. Alana M. DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown) and known as the  Transportation Emission and Mobile (TEAM) Community Act would implement the Transportation Climate Initiative program in Rhode Island, providing funding to make clean transportation options available and affordable for all Rhode Islanders, while reducing pollution that harms public health.
  • 2021-S 0003A and 2021-H 5763 — These bills sponsored by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown, New Shoreham) and House Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence) would prohibit health insurers from charging higher rates based on gender. These bills are scheduled for passage in concurrence, after which they will be sent the governor.
  • 2021-S 0501A — Sponsored by Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown), this bill would require every short-term rental property listed for rent on the website of any third-party hosting platform that conducts business in Rhode Island to be registered with the Department of Business Regulation.
  • 2021-H 5642A — This bill sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick) would require financial institutions to report suspected financial exploitation of seniors to the Office of Healthy Aging, and authorize them to temporarily hold transactions they suspect as such. The Senate version of this bill (2021-S 0264A), sponsored by Chairwoman Coyne, is on the House calendar today, with both scheduled for passage in concurrence, after which they can be sent to the governor.
  • 2021-S 0342A — Sponsored by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton) this bill would require public Internet service providers to follow internet service neutrality requirements in certain public procurement contracts.
  • 2021-S 0755 — Sponsored by Sen. Melissa A. Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), this bill would require that any single-user toilet facility in a public building or place of public accommodation be available for use by persons of any gender by Jan. 1, 2022.
  • 2021-H 5105B — Sponsored by Rep. Jacquelyn Baginski (D-Dist. 17, Cranston) this bill will allow Class B liquor license holders and brewpubs to sell certain amounts of beer, wine and mixed drinks with take-out food order through March 1, 2022. This bill has been amended in the Senate and must return to the House for passage in concurrence.
