Rep. Casimiro honored with Afterschool Champion Award
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter) was honored by the Rhode Island Afterschool Network, an initiative of the United Way, today with the organization’s Afterschool Champion Award at its 2018 Lights On Afterschool Summit.
“Making quality afterschool learning available for every child in Rhode Island is a true passion for me because the evidence is overwhelmingly clear that learning and development of our students should not be limited to just school hours. I’d like to thank the RI Afterschool Network for this honor and I am looking forward to continuing our work to ensure every Rhode Island child is prepared for the very best start in life as possible,” added Representative Casimiro.
Representative Casimiro was honored because she exemplified the three keys in afterschool learning: keeping children safe, providing them with increased access to high quality learning opportunities, and helping working families.
“Representative Casimiro has shown dedication and commitment to increasing access to high quality out of school time learning opportunities in her district as well as the state. She has been a steadfast champion as a lead sponsor of the Out of School Time Commission and is so richly deserving of this recognition. On behalf of the network of parents, advocates, educators, afterschool professionals, and youth in Rhode Island, we would like to thank Representative Casimiro for her service to afterschool learning, said Mavis Nimoh, head of the Rhode Island Afterschool Network.
Launched in October 2000, Lights on Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in keeping young people safe, inspiring them to learn, and helping working families. Lights on Afterschool has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and annually sees more than 1 million Americans celebrating the work of the afterschool field at more than 8,000 events nationwide.
