Rep. Azzinaro’s bill that makes car dealers disclose if vehicles have spare tire and jack passes House
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro’s (D-Dist. 37, Westerly) legislation (2017-H 5221A) that would require motor vehicle dealers to disclose in writing that a vehicle being sold has a spare tire and jack passed the House of Representatives.
“This bill is about protecting consumers who suffer blowouts and find to their surprise that there is neither a spare tire or jack in their vehicle. Consumers need to know if these crucial pieces of equipment are in their vehicles and this bill will ensure that if an emergency occurs on the roadway,” said Representative Azzinaro, Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs.
The legislation would apply for the sales of both new and used vehicles. The act would not apply if the vehicle is equipped with self-sealing tires that can operate for at least 50 miles at speeds up to at least 55 miles per hour or the vehicle is equipped with a factory installed tire repair and inflation system. If a vehicle dealer violates the law, a civil penalty of $100 shall be assessed against the dealer.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
