Kettle praises signing of raw milk cheese legislation
STATE HOUSE – Cheese aficionados can now add raw milk cheese made in Rhode Island to their menus thanks to the signing of legislation long championed by Senator Nicholas D. Kettle, (R-Dist. 21, Coventry, Foster, Scituate, West Greenwich).
Kettle, who has introduced legislation each year since 2013 that would allow for the production and sale of raw milk cheese made in Rhode Island, said he was pleased to see the passage into law of (2016-H 7817).
“The local dairy industry approached me several years ago because before the passage of this law, you were able to buy raw milk cheese in Rhode Island, but it couldn’t be produced in our state,” Kettle said. “People here could only buy raw milk cheese from places like Connecticut and Massachusetts, which put our local dairy farmers at a disadvantage. I am happy to see that this bill passed after working with the dairy industry for the past several years.”
The new law, which was supported by the Rhode Island Farm Bureau, allows the production of raw milk cheese in Rhode Island in accordance with USFDA standards and under a permit issued by the director of the department of health.
