MEDIA ADVISORY: Diaz, Pichardo to host celebration of 172 years of Dominican Republic independence, heritage
STATE HOUSE – In conjunction with the Dominican Independence and Heritage Award Committee, Rep. Grace Diaz (D – Dist. 11, Providence) and Sen. Juan M. Pichardo (D – Dist. 2, Providence) are proud to host the Dominican Republic Independence Anniversary and Heritage Celebration Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. at the State House. The celebration, which will commemorate the anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence, will be held in the governor’s State Room.
The Dominican Republic declared its independence from Haiti on Feb. 27, 1844.
This year’s ceremony will recognize outstanding individuals who represent the best of the Dominican-American community’s efforts to make Rhode Island a better place, including Emerson Brito for outstanding contribution to Dominican art, José Generes for outstanding Dominican business leadership, Grace González for outstanding Dominican community leadership service, Yasmil Báez for outstanding Dominican leadership in education, Luis del Rio for outstanding Dominican public servant, Jimmy Peguero for outstanding Dominican contribution to the Dominican sport, and Congressman David Cicilline for outstanding contribution to the Dominican community in Rhode Island. This year’s keynote speaker will be Ramon Anibal Ramos.
Senator Pichardo and Representative Diaz are the founders of the Dominican Independence Award Committee and annual celebration, which has shed light on the many contributions of Dominican-Americans in Rhode Island for the last 12 years.
