Governor signs bill that extends deadline on student shell fishing licenses
STATE HOUSE — Gov. Gina Raimondo signed legislation introduced by Sen. James C. Sheehan (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown) and Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).that establishes a deadline of June 30 for the application of student shell fishing licenses.
Officials in the Department of Environmental Management, who requested the legislation, believe the new deadline will allow more students to apply for the license. The deadline for regular commercial shell fishing licenses is Feb. 28.
“We are running low on shell fishermen and women,” said Senator Sheehan. “Commercial shell fishing has been an important part of Rhode Island since its earliest days. The number of commercial licenses the DEM grants has been on the decline over the past few years for a number of reasons. This bill will encourage more young people to enter this local trade.”
The bill (2015-S 0751), which was cosponsored by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown, New Shoreham), passed both chambers unanimously. The House version of the bill (2015-H 6344) was introduced by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).
