3/29/2016 Rep. Abney tours St. Clare’s facility expansion
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Marvin L. Abney recently toured the under-construction expansion of the St. Clare skilled nursing facility in Newport.  St. Clare’s currently is a 47-bed skilled nursing facility on Spring Street.  The expansion and renovation will add 13 skilled nursing beds, 40 new independent/assisted-living units, an adult day care program, a memory care unit and a dedicated rehabilitation program.

“I have been a strong supporter of St. Clare-Newport since I was on the Newport Zoning Board many years ago and with this amazing expansion, St. Clare will be an even more valuable asset to the community,” said Representative Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown).

The renovation transforms St. Clare into a “small house” model nursing care facility. It improves upon traditional skilled nursing home models by adding assisted/independent living facilities and altering size, design and organization to create a warm, welcoming community environment. The renovation will enhance the staff’s ability to provide privacy, autonomy, support, comfort and dignity to elders and their families. The project will create household living environments that offer residents private rooms and baths arranged around a central living room, kitchen and dining area. This design will allow St. Clare to provide services to elders in a home setting.

Rep. Marvin Abney, center, takes a tour of the addition being built at St. Clare-Newport, a skilled nursing facility, on March 23, 2016.  He is joined by Mary Beth Daigneault, administrator, and Frank Spinella, manager of the construction project
